Calcium keeps your bones and teeth strong and helps control muscle movements, blood clotting and nerve impulses. Ninety-nine percent of the calcium in your body is in your bones and teeth. If you don’t consume enough calcium, your body will pull it from your bones. That can lead to osteoporosis, which puts you at risk for fractures. Plenty of calcium in your diet helps with skin allergies and keeps your hair and nails strong and healthy.

Magnesium is needed in more than 300 biochemical reactions in your body. It helps muscle and nerve function, your heartbeat, immune system and bone health. Low magnesium can lead to nervousness, inability to concentrate, dizziness and headaches. Research is looking into this mineral’s role in hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Potassium plays an essential role in the function of all muscles in your body, particularly the heart, is important for kidney function, and helps maintain the right fluid and electrolyte balance in your body’s cells. It’s needed for nerve impulses and for the metabolism of protein, fat and carbohydrates.

Sodium is necessary in your body to regulate blood and body fluids, for the transmission of nerve impulses, and to coordinate the regulation contractions of the heart muscle. The body works very hard to maintain an idea balance of salt and water, in order to keep everything functioning properly.

Sulfates are related to sulfuric acid. They help detoxify the liver and play a role in making your gall bladder work. They’re absorbed in the body in very small quantities but are crucial for digestion.
