Stay hydrated: when hydration goes viral

Have you seen these? Over the past several years memes entitled Stay hydrated and Drink water, with their accompanying hashtags, have been all over social media. Whether serious, or using irony or a touch of dark humour, they remind us of the importance of staying hydrated.

Drink water: trendy, but sage advice

The Stay hydrated movement has gone through several variations over time. While first appearing on Imgur in 2013, it wasn’t until 2014 that it really took off on Tumblr with the invention of its own fun drinking game: “Take a shot of water every couple hours to make sure you’re healthy and hydrated.” Captain America even got involved in 2017, bringing in more than 69,000 views in 3 years.

Other celebrities, from the Great Gatsby to Barack Obama, got in on the act, making hydration a must and elevating regular water to the status of a trendy drink.

Water: benefits for the body and the soul

A main ingredient of life, water is essential for the health of living organisms. Over the past years, because of the social media trend—or perhaps the reason for its existence—water has become an elixir able to heal many problems. Even the social media giant Twitter adopted Drink water as its resolution for the new decade on New Year’s Day 2020.

Your body is made up of about 70% water: your brain, 85%, your muscles, 70% and your bones, 22%. Beyond the meme, then, there are many benefits to staying hydrated.

  • Healthy skin: water helps regulate your body’s pH levels, evacuate toxins and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Prevent inflammatory diseases: water helps prevent arthritis by keeping your joints lubricated.
  • Good concentration: water reduces headaches, of which dehydration is a frequent cause. Dehydration can also cause a lack of concentration and confusion.
  • Good circulation: in extreme cases of dehydration your blood pressure can drop, causing dizziness or fainting.

How much liquid should we drink each day?

To stay hydrated, experts recommend drinking two litres of liquids, no matter what kind, per day. Your age, morphology, level of physical activity and mood are different factors that can influence the amount of water your body needs. When it’s hot out, sweating makes proper hydration even more important. For athletes, certain precautions are necessary to get the most out of training and replace water lost from sweating. No matter what you’re doing, it’s always a good idea to have a bottle of water on hand! And since Eska is pure, being naturally filtered through Quebec’s glacial sediments, it’s an ideal way to fulfill your body’s hydration needs.
